When trying to improve their golf game, many people focus on driving and the rest of their long game. While the long game shots may seem quite impressive, it is an effective short game that will truly improve a score.

The two largest components of a short game are putting and chipping. Knowing how and when to put tends to be easier than chipping, because you are always on the green and using a putter. Luckily, there are some golf chipping tips that can be used to improve anyone’s chipping game.

The first of the golf chipping tips is knowing what club to use. Normally, chipping takes place within 50 yards of the green, so nothing stronger than a 9 iron should be needed. However, there are situations when a pitching or sand wedge may be needed, such as when you are hitting out of a bunker.

Your golf short game involves the strokes near the green, particularly chips and putts. Over the course of a round of golf, close to seventy percent of your strokes will be from chips and putts, so improving this aspect of your game, will greatly improve your overall golf game. Just like in any aspect of your golf game, the best way to improve your golf short game is to practice.

Practice chipping by picking a target, then picking a spot in front of that target where you think the ball should land in order to stop close to the target. Now back up about 10 yards from that spot and practice hitting that spot. Hit about 15 or 20 balls, adjusting your swing as needed. Then back up another 10 yards and repeat, then another 10, and so on until you have reached 60 yards out. If you practice chipping and putting at least as much as you do driving, then your golf short game will improve.

Reading books on how to improve your golf game can be helpful, but there is really no substitute for a demonstration from a pro. Taking a private lesson at your local golf course can be quite costly, so many golfers opt to take a video golf lesson as a way to take strokes off their game.

When you are able to see what is being explained, it is much easier to replicate the technique yourself. A video golf lesson can be taken in the privacy of your home. In addition, golfers can focus on the parts of their golf game that need the most attention and replay those demonstrations over and over.

If you are looking for a way to improve your golf game, but do not want to spend as much time and money that professional golf lessons require, purchasing a golf instruction book would be an excellent idea.

A golf instruction book can be used by any golfer with any skill level. Certain books are designed to help beginner golfers learn how to stand and hold a club, while other more advanced books could help a golfer improve their swing.

Almost any problem that a golfer has with their game or swing could be corrected by reading a golf instruction book. These instructions have been shown to help golfers rid themselves of a hook or slice, and even generate more power on their swing. These books also can help golfers learn how to hit out of bunkers and rough terrain.

I’d like to highly encourage anyone who hasn’t tried it yet to get some professional golf instruction to improve their golf game. A professional golf instructor is exactly the extra pair of eyes that many casual golfers need to catch the easily repeatable mistakes that can really hurt their game.

Search online for some of the differences between learning to golf with friends or from a book and getting help from a real golf professional to get an idea of what a big change an instructor can make. If you love golf and haven’t gotten around to trying classes or an instructor, now is a great time to look into getting professional golf instruction.

A lot of people like to talk about how they improved their golf game or how they enjoyed a certain product. I, however, just have to talk about one of the worst golf swings I’ve ever taken. I was on a par 5 with a dog leg to the right. My initial drive had taken me to just before the bend in the fairway. It’s a pretty open hole without any trees. I figured that I would just hit it across the rough directly toward the hole. Unfortunately, I swung poorly. My golf ball sliced hard, hit the golf cart, thumped my friend in the back of the head, and he was out like a light! Talk about an embarrassing emergency room visit. That was one bad golf swing.

Even a single golf swing lesson can have a dramatic impact on the golf game of an individual who has grasped the basics. If you have reached an intermediate level, shooting consistent scores across a period of weeks or months, a golf swing lesson can help you to identify significant deficiencies in your swing and give you some of the tools, tips, and pointers needed to begin to correct the problems. Even making these minor changes can very quickly affect your score, depending on the source of the problem. Even if the changes are not immediate, taking a golf swing lesson can allow a professional golf instructor to analyze your swing and address what steps are needed. Even if the pro feels that additional lessons are needed, accurately gauging what you should target is of value.

Anyone who enjoys playing golf could benefit from taking a professional golf lesson. Golf lessons can be designed to help improve even an expert golfer’s golf game. Lessons are commonly provided through country clubs, indoor golf facilities, or through private golf pros.

Most golf lessons work by analyzing your current swing. The golf pro will take a detailed look at your swing and determine where improvements can be made. If needed, the pro will completely revamp your swing and attempt to eliminate your old golfing habits.

A golf pro will also help you with more difficult shots, including hitting out of a sand trap, hitting out of deep rough, and trying to hit up or downhill. During your golf lessons you could also get help with chipping and putting.

A friend of mine, who was a scratch golfer and a PGA tour caddy, was helping me with my golf game. He said the three most important things to check before each swing are: Grip; Alignment; Posture. Since I’m an acronym freak, I immediately said, “oh, remember the GAP.”

If you read any type of golf instruction book (which I’m sure most of you don’t), aren’t these the first three things they address?

Ben Hogan, David Ledbetter, Hank Haney — they all start with the correct grip, proper alignment (both ball positioning and target) and posture. If just one of these elements is awry, you’ve already penalized yourself from executing a quality shot before you have even started your swing.

So, before you swing, remember GAP – Grip, Alignment, Posture. If these three things are solid in your setup, you’ve increased your chances of hitting a solid shot by 99%.
